LOCATION
The university city of Cottbus, with a population of nearly 100,000, is the second largest city in the state of Brandenburg after Potsdam. It is located between Berlin and Dresden, next to the Spree River. The Spree Forest borders it to the north. It is famous for Branitz Park, which was designed by Hermann von Pückler-Muskau from 1845. It impresses with its castle, as well as a land pyramid and a lake pyramid. The last-named is the final resting place of the prince and his wife.
From 1957 onwards, Cottbus became an important coal and energy supplier. With the planned coal phase-out in Germany, Cottbus and the surrounding region are increasingly affected by structural change, in which the Brandenburg University of Technology (BTU) Cottbus-Senftenberg is significantly involved.
