Istanbul, 18-19 April 2024


We are pleased to invite you to Istanbul, the unique city where continents meet, for the upcoming WIRE’s MC Meeting & 5th Working Groups Workshop scheduled to take place in Turkey on April 18-19, 2024. 

This event is organized in collaboration with Hacettepe University, Istanbul Technical University (ITU), Yıldız Technical University (YTU) and TÜBİTAK Marmara Research Center (MAM).

The first day of the WIRE’s MC Meeting & 5th Working Groups Workshop will feature meetings at ITU Ayazaga Campus. On the second day, the meetings will be held at the Marmara Research Center Campus of TÜBİTAK, and the participants will have the opportunity to visit related research laboratories in the TUBİTAK Campus.

Keynote presentations about Turkey’s and Europe’s first carbon-negative integrated biorefinery and biogas production in the mega city of Istanbul’s WWTP and solid waste sites towards sustainability will be shared.

We have planned sessions to enhance the networking opportunities of the participants during the workshop. Please save the dates and mark your calendars for April 18-19, 2024. VENUE

WIRE’s MC Meeting & 5th Working Groups Workshop will be held in İstanbul which intends to enhance participation of WIRE members by having industrial sessions & visits, poster presentations from the participants, as well as two keynotes and WG meetings.

This event will contribute to move forward in each WG goals and deliverables, as well as promoting interaction between WG participants and stakeholders.

First Day – İstanbul Technical University (İTÜ)

Counting down to celebrating the 250th year, Istanbul Technical University, one of the oldest technical universities of the world and the first technical university of Türkiye, is identified with the education of engineering and architecture.

İTÜ contributed with all efforts in every aspect of Turkey’s cities and anywhere in villages; with roads and bridges, factories and dams, communication networks and power plants. In addition to contributing to the development of the country for more than 2 centuries with brainpower, İTÜ has left marks in many areas by raising countless scientists, businesspeople, politicians and bureaucrats.

İTÜ has more than hundred undergraduate and graduate programs in 14 faculties with several laboratories and research centers in five different campus (https://www.itu.edu.tr/en/homepage).

Second Day – TÜBİTAK – MAM

The Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey (TUBITAK) is the public agency put  in charge of promoting, developing, organizing, conducting and coordinating research and development  in line with the national targets of economic development and technical progress. Marmara Research Center (MAM), one of the research and development units of TUBITAK, was established in 1972, in Gebze, Kocaeli. The  aim of TUBITAK MAM is to conduct applied research projects integrated  with national and international industrial entities in a customer-focused policy and becoming a world leader in science and technology production with its research, development and innovation capabilities widely shared by its Energy TechnologiesClimate Change and SustainabilityMaterials Technologies and Life Sciences.

(P.S. : On the second day of the conference (19 April 2024), transportation to TÜBİTAK – MAM will be organized via a shuttle that will take off from İTÜ Campus at 08.30 AM)

How to get to İTÜ

There are public transportation such as metro and buses from alternative accommodation premises to İTÜ-Ayazağa station. However, it is best to use metro due to the highly possible trafic jam. The meeting venue of the first day is the Faculty of Civil Engineering at İTÜ.

İstanbul Card, which can be purchased in main metro stations can be used on public transportation in İstanbul. The credit cards can also be used for ticket purchasing.

Using metro line M2

Transportation alternatives from İstanbul Airport to accommodation premises and meeting venue

Metro line (M11)

İstanbul Airport is at European side of İstanbul. Metro line M11 is the metro route from İstanbul Airport to Gayrettepe (purple line in the metro network). Transfer from M11 to M2 at Gayrettepe station will take you to İTÜ Ayazağa Metro Station and to touristical places (e.g., Taksim, Şişhane, and Haliç Metro Stations).

H-2 İstanbul Airport to Mecidiyeköy. Mecidiyeköy is on the M2 metro route (Look at page 3) and close to İTÜ.

Havaist (at the İstanbul Airport)
The Havaist bus services which are very convenient to reach to several city centers, can be found at Floor -2 of the airport.

HVİST 15 route: İstanbul Airport — 4. Levent — Zincirlikuyu — Beşiktaş, *4. Levent is on the M2 metro line.

Transportation alternatives from Sabiha Gökçen Airport to accommodation premises and meeting venue

Metro line (M4)
Sabiha Gökçen Airport is at Anatolian side of İstanbul and relatively close to TUBITAK – MAM (~30 km) where the second day of the conference will take place. Metro line M4 is the metro route from İstanbul Sabiha Gökçen Airport to Kadıköy. At the Ünalan Metro Station, a transfer from metro to Metrobus 34 G, 34 A, 34 AS (Uzunçayır metrobus station) on the direction of Zincirlikuyu and Mecidiyeköy will take you to M2 metro line.
